The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 as a special foundation under the control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acting in accordance with the Japan Foundation Law. The foundation's goal is to "effectively undertake international cultural exchange activities and contribute to the improvement of world cultures and the welfare of mankind, in order to deepen understanding of Japan in foreign countries, further international understanding and promote international friendship and goodwill"
The Foundation is particularly active in exchanges in the areas of the humanities, social sciences, arts and sports. Activities cover almost all fields of human and intellectual exchange, ranging from teaching the Japanese language and supporting Japanese studies overseas to promoting exchanges of distinguished persons, exhibitions of art and living culture, and audio-visual media and publications.
