Caution: Scammers sending fake emails from the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan

May 10, 2013

The Embassy of Japan in Pakistan became aware that a certain NGO received a fake email which has the appearance of being sent from a staff member of the Embassy of Japan. The fake e-mail was apparently sent to request the NGO to submit proposals for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Please be informed that the Embassy usually does not send out emails soliciting NGOs to submit proposals for the GGP. Please also note that the Embassy accepts final applications of the GGP only by post, and not by emails or fax.

The Embassy uses only ‘@mofa.go.jp’ or <@ib.mofa.go.jp> domains when it sends out  emails, and never uses open domains such as <@***.co.jp>, <@***.com> etc. However, please also bear in mind that these were cases in the past where emails with virus attachment using the domain <@mofa.go.jp> of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan were used in scams.

If you get any suspicious emails, please do not open the attachment and delete the emails immediately. Please contact us if you need to clarify whether the emails you received are genuine communications from the Embassy.
